Meet Carl, a one-of-a-kind paint palette fish created entirely from pieces of dried acrylic paint collected from my studio palettes. Every colorful layer, unexpected texture, wonky fin, and bit of perfectly imperfect personality comes from paint that once helped create another work of art. Instead of scraping those beautiful remnants away, I’ve given them a second life — this time as the art itself.
Each piece of dried paint is hand-selected, cut, layered, and assembled onto smooth Gessobord, allowing the dimensional paint fragments to stand out against a clean, simple background. No two palette pieces — and therefore no two fish — can ever be exactly alike. The colors, marks, and textures are little remnants of paintings made in my Greenville, South Carolina studio, making Carl a tiny collage of the creative process itself.
