Meet Walter, a one-of-a-kind paint palette fish created from layers of dried acrylic paint collected from my studio palettes. With his cool coastal blues, sea-glass greens, touches of gold, and slightly unruly fins, Walter feels like he’s spent a little time swimming through Lowcountry waters — and probably has a story or two to tell.
Each piece of dried paint is hand-selected, cut, layered, and assembled to create a completely original fish with its own shape, texture, and personality. The palette pieces carry the brushstrokes, color combinations, and little remnants of paintings created in my Greenville, South Carolina studio — giving paint that would otherwise be discarded an entirely new life as art.
Walter is mounted on a warm peach-toned canvas, where the dimensional layers of paint and touches of metallic gold stand out beautifully against the textured background. Playful without feeling overly whimsical, he’s a little coastal, a little collected, and wonderfully imperfect.
Paint Palette Fish: Walter is an original mixed media artwork by Annie Howell. No reproductions, no two alike — just one very distinguished fish made from the beautiful leftovers of the creative process
